Blue Shield of California continues to closely monitor the trajectory of the COVID-19 public health emergency and continues to look for ways to assist their members, providers, employers, and business partners. Through December 31, 2020, they are extending cost-sharing waivers for COVID-19 treatment and Teladoc virtual medicine visits.

Blue Shield of California previously announced in April 2020 they would waive coinsurance, co-payments, and deductibles for treatment for COVID-19 received from March 1, 2020, through May 31, 2020. This waiver was extended through September 30, 2020 and is again being extended through December 31, 2020. This applies to fully insured plans, plans purchased through Covered California, and plans written directly through Blue Shield of California, and more.

Blue Shield of California will waive co-pays and coinsurance for Teladoc visits, behavioral health and general medical through December 31, 2020, whether or not the visit is COVID-19 related. Teladoc can currently screen for COVID-19 but cannot order the tests.

On July 17, 2020, DMHC issued emergency regulation regarding COVID-19 testing for “essential workers” and other individuals which expires on January 14, 2021. Blue Shield of California will continue to comply with all state and federal laws and regulations until the end of this public health emergency.
